Living Will – IMPORTANT INFORMATION

For people who do not want physically invasive psychiatric treatment

The making of a living will is a very serious step, and should only be done after careful consideration of the consequences. It is often a good idea to discuss what you want to do with a close relative or friend, and in particular to discuss it with your GP.

This particular living will relates directly to mental treatment. Given that a living will only becomes relevant at a time when you lack mental capacity, this could well be a time when you have had a mental breakdown of some kind and are considered in need of mental treatment. You may be denying yourself, therefore, certain types of mental treatment, which many doctors may consider that you need.

Before you make your decision you may want to review what leading doctors say about these treatments. Whilst we cannot provide you with medical advice, and are not responsible for the opinions of any doctor or so-called expert in this area, you will find links to articles in favour of these kinds of treatments here, here and here. You will find links to articles against these kinds of treatments here, here and here. There are many other such articles, both for and against, to be found on the internet.
